PEMF THERAPY RESEARCH FACTS

PEMF RESEARCH

NASA's Long Association with Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy

It is well established that NASA (as well as the Russian Space Program) have long recognized the critical importance of maintaining the health of astronauts in space, using PEMF. In 2009, NASA was awarded a US patent - US 7,601,114 B2 - for their research on PEMF.  As an adjunct to the NASA tissue repair patent, pulsed magnetic fields were also used to stimulate the growth of stem cells.  See the abstract and articles noted below.

The story behind PHx's space technology certification

The Space Foundation evolved from NASA’s research and development of space technology.  After the launch of the first humans into orbit,  it became obvious that human (and animal) bodies cannot be separated from Earth's magnetic field, without dire consequences.  After approximately one hour in orbit, U.S. and Russian astronauts began to suffer major loss in bone density, and muscle deterioration. Research into the effects of Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields became an urgent priority at NASA.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19782781 ( Circadian Rhythm Affects the Preventive Role of Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields on Ovariectomy-induced Osteoporosis in Rats (2010).  "Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) have been proved effective in the prevention of osteoporosis both experimentally and clinically. [...]  In conclusion, the results indicated that circadian rhythm (CR)  was an important factor determining the preventive effect of PEMF on osteoporosis and PEMF exposure in the daytime presented better stimulus efficacy in rats." )

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19670410 ( Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields Stimulation Affects Bone Mineral Density (BMD) and Local Factor Production of Rats with Disuse Osteoporosis (2010).  "Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) have been used widely to treat nonunion fractures and related problems in bone healing, as a biological and physical method.  [...]  The results found demonstrate that PEMF stimulation can efficiently suppress bone mass loss.  We, therefore, conclude that PEMF may affect bone remodeling." )

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20329696 ( Low Frequency Pulsed Electromagnetic Field -- A Viable Alternative Therapy for Arthritis (2009).  "Arthritis refers to more than 100 disorders of the musculoskeletal system.  The existing pharmacological interventions for arthritis offer only symptomatic relief and they are not definitive and curative.  Magnetic healing has been known from antiquity and it is evolved to the present times with the advent of electromagnetism .  [...]  Low frequency pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) can provide noninvasive, safe and easy to apply method to treat pain, inflammation and dysfunctions associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) and PEMF has a long term record of safety.  [...]  The analysis of various studies [...] has conclusively shown that PEMF not only alleviates the pain in the arthritis condition but it also affords chondroprotection, exerts anti-inflammatory action and helps in bone remodeling and this could be developed as a viable alternative for arthritis therapy." )

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2195843 (Bone Density Changes in Osteoporosis prone Women Exposed to Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields / PEMFs (1990). "The data suggest that properly applied PEMFs, if scaled for whole-body use, may have clinical application in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis ." )

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3285429 (The Effect of Long-term Pulsing Electromagnetic Field Stimulation on Experimental Osteoporosis of Rats (1988).  "These findings suggested that PEMF stimulation exerted a preventive effect against bone loss of osteoporotic hind legs.  Furthermore, an observed increase in bone marrow blood flow seemed to be related with this increase of bone volume and bone formation activity.")

NO KNOWN SIDE EFFECTS

E-book:  In a key, double-blind study on osteoarthritis, done in 1993 and published in the Journal of Rheumatology, it was noted that over a period of 17 years, more than 200,000 patients had been inclinical trials with PEMF without any mentionable side effects.  (p. 55, middle-left).

PubMed.com:  This is the well-known, government web site run by the National Institutes of Health, used by doctors and nurses around the world, to research published, double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical studies on a wide variety of medical topics.  Here are some applicable abstracts with respect to theefficacy of and lack of side effects with PEMF therapy.

" )

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17892036 ( Effect of Low Frequency Magnetic Fields (LFMF) After Ischemic Stroke (2007).  "The recommended doses of LFMF seem to be adequate to obtain therapeutic effects and may be used in the early period of rehabilitation.  As no adverse effects (which could be attributed to LFMF), were observed, this method of physical therapy can be recognized as a safe one and worth making popular in clinical practice." )
