Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy (PEMF) is becoming one of the hottest topics in both the treatment of pain and regenerative medicine. Foundationally, early research on PEMF was conducted by the Soviet space program due to their cosmonauts experiencing negative effects following reduced magnetic exposure during spaceflight. Outer space and the surface of the Earth are very different in their magnetic environment i.e., the magnitude of the Earth’s magnetic field decreases as the distance from the earth increases. Due to the reduced magnetic field strength in space, both the Russian and NASA space programs equip their space capsules and space suits with magnetic field generators to simulate the Earth’s magnetic field. Prior to the discovery of the importance of magnetic fields to the health of the early Soviet cosmonauts, these space travelers returned to Earth very ill with their strength and energy depleted. NASA soon followed with its own magnetic research, and ongoing research into the physiologic effects of PEMF has continued since. Research is even addressing the effect of PEMF on cancer cells, and through affecting both the cellular membrane and intracellular mitochondria from a bioelectromagnetic standpoint, PEMF will play an important role in the topics of longevity and wellness healthcare.

There has been thousands of scientific research papers published on the subject of PEMF over the last fifty years; so obviously PEMF is not a new topic. Our planet generates a geomagnetic field from its molten iron core and the rotation of the earth. Additionally, within our ionosphere is the Schumann frequency, which is produced by lightning strikes and solar flares. This Schumann frequency resonates within our ionosphere at 7.8 hertz (Hz), which is classified as a very low frequency. It becomes clear that all of life on planet earth has developed in both this geomagnetic and Schumann frequency environment. Furthermore, Dr. Thomas Goodwin, a NASA scientist, patented a magnetic field generator that uses a low frequency similar to the natural Schumann frequency of the earth that is designed to heal tissues of mammals. When we think of electricity, we think of the movement of electrons, but what is PEMF? It is more like gravity in that the force of a magnetic field is applied to all of our tissues and cells that are in the magnetic field just like gravity affects all of our cells. Why PEMF Works

To make a wiser buying decision, it helps to know what's happening when you
use a PEMF device. We're going to go over the basics so you have a clearer
understanding of what is really going on during your PEMF treatment. After you know, you may

The first PEMF device was called a 'lightning' machine for a reason! PEMF
works because it charges up your cells with electricity. Problems that the PEMF
treats such as chronic pain can only happen in areas of low voltage in the body. That is,
places where the cells are low on energy for any number of reasons (injury, fatigue,
illness, etc).
A PEMF machine sends extra electrical charge to those low energy areas using
magnetic fields to carry it into the body. Basically, the device send a 'package' of
energy into the low energy areas - think of the magnetic field as the envelope and the

There are only two big differences between PEMF machines:

2) How fast each pulse enters the body
This is important because the faster the pulse enters the body, the more
energy the cell will actually receive. That's because the cell can only take in electricity
that moves fast enough to penetrate its cell wall! So, the faster the pulse, the more

High Power devices pulse faster than Lower Power ones. And the PEMF8000

Physics Engaging Electromagnetic Therapy Products

There are approximately 75 trillion cells in the human body – each cell has over 1 million neuropeptide receptors. The cells of the human body vibrate or oscillate. (This can be seen in video footage of red blood cells traveling through blood vessels under high magnification, or macrophages chasing bacteria.) Electromagnetic impulses of the appropriate frequencies can produce cellular resonance – vibration at maximum amplitude. Neuro-peptide receptors on the surface of the cell vibrate. As with the cell, electromagnetic impulses produce resonant vibrations of these membrane receptors to stimulate a variety of functions within the cell.

An electromagnetic field applied within a biological window* signals all of these receptors simultaneously. This is the essence of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. The beneficial effects of PEMF may be produced through improved intercellular communication and intracellular interactions. The resonance effect restores disrupted or abnormal cellular and/or cell receptor oscillations that are vital for metabolic processes, circulation, cell regeneration and the immune system (a biological window is a range or spectrum of electromagnetic frequencies that are readily accepted by the body and converted to positive physiological responses. Signals that fall outside the biological window have little or no effect).

When receptor signaling takes place by first messengers (proteins, hormones, amino acids, enzymes and electromagnetic signals), the cell changes its behavior in a prescribed way and the inner machinery of the cell is directed to perform a prescribed function, including the activation of enzymes such as protein kinase and the manufacture of proteins, the transfer of the effects of hormones that cannot pass through the cell membrane such as adrenaline and glucagons, and the regulation of calcium ion flow through the membrane. Once a membrane receptor has been signaled effectively a second messenger carries the signal from the cell membrane to the cell’s inner machinery. The net effect is increased ATP and increased energy for muscle contraction, exercise, and the healing of tissue damage.

One key function of the cell’s membrane is to provide a stable environment for biological processes inside the cell. This is achieved through the protective function of selective permeability. One of the ways the cell membrane achieves selective permeability is through the establishment of a membrane potential. The membrane potential of a cell is the voltage difference between the interior of the cell and the exterior of the cell. The cell’s normal membrane potential is 70-90 mV (milliVolts.) Someone in a state of illness or disease may have a membrane potential of 30-40 mV.

ATP synthesis by mitochondria is increased by exposure to weak pulsating electromagnetic fields – PEMFs do this by increasing ATPase activity (Blank 1995/50, Lednev 2001/51) ATP synthesis is also increased by electromagnetic signaling of the cell membrane to open the ion pumps. The increased ATP synthesis continues for a time even after the ion pumps become inactive. (Detinger 2002/52)

This is all a long-winded way to state that PEMFs enhance cell membrane permeability and cell membrane potential – both of which lead to higher functioning cells which leads to a healthier body.
